Dr. David Liu

Dr. David Liu is a interventional radiologist (IR) and Associate Professor with the School of Biomedical Engineering at the University of British Columbia. He holds clinical appointments at Vancouver General Hospital, UBC Hospital, and the BC Cancer Agency in addition to a voluntary Professorial Appointment at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Dr. Liu received his MD from the University of Toronto in 1998 and completed his radiology residency at UBC, followed by a fellowship in interventional radiology at Northwestern University. Internationally recognized for his work in embolization, interventional oncology and complex venous disease, Dr. Liu has published extensively on topics such as non-invasive imaging, pain management, and cancer therapies. He has received numerous awards, including the Young Investigator Award from the Canadian Association of Radiologists, inducted as a Fellow of the Society of Interventional Radiology, and recipient of the CAIR Award for International Contributions in the Field of IR.

Dr. Liu has made significant contributions to the field of interventional radiology, particularly in the area of genicular artery embolization (GAE) for knee osteoarthritis. Work done in collaboration with Dr Badii has explored the mechanisms of pain associated with osteoarthritis and how GAE can reduce inflammation and pain in osteoarthritis by altering synovial blood flow and the use of other mechanisms to detect and measure the outcomes of treatment. This innovative approach has resulted in the creation of the Genicular Osteoarthritis Therapy (GOAT) group that has involved key stakeholders in community and academia that has been focused on identifying the underlying mechanisms of inflammatory processes in osteoarthritis, potentially offering a new non-surgical treatment options for patients with knee pain.
